Free Range Eggs
The Co-op ONLY sells UK Free Range fresh eggs.
We also ONLY use Free Range eggs as an ingredient in our own brand products
Avian Flu is a virus which can infect birds and make them ill. This year, recorded cases of Avian flu in the UK have been low and the government has not imposed any countrywide measures to protect UK birds.
However, in some countries, Free Range hens are currently being kept indoors under a housing order issued by their government to protect hens from avian flu and to keep them well. Holland is one of the countries affected. There are twelve Co-op products which use liquid FR eggs from Holland as one of their ingredients. So, at the moment this means we cannot currently claim that these twelve products contain Free Range eggs. As soon as the restrictions are lifted in Holland, they will revert to Free Range again.
Liquid egg is used as an ingredient in a wide number of products which are produced on a large scale for retail sale. It is simply pasteurised egg yolks and whites blended together so that a large quantity of eggs can be added in one go to the cooking process, rather than cracking individual eggs.
A wide number of products where egg is used as an ingredient. We only use Free Range eggs in our own brand products, be that as whole eggs or liquid egg.
We only use Free Range egg as an ingredient in all our own brand products and this is supplied as ‘liquid Free Range egg’, primarily from Britain but also a small amount from Holland where there are currently avian flu restrictions in place. There are nine Co-op products which use liquid FR eggs from Holland as one of their ingredients. So, at the moment this means we cannot currently claim that these nine products contain Free Range eggs. As soon as the restrictions are lifted in Holland, they will revert to Free Range again.
Avian flu, which is sometimes called bird flu refers to flu caused by viruses that infect birds and make them ill. It is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. The infection can cause different symptoms in birds, ranging from mild illness, which may pass unnoticed, to fatality. To stop the spread of Avian Flu, on official Dutch Government orders, hens must be housed inside.
It is extremely rare for a human to catch Avian flu and where this has occurred it is as a result of direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. One human cannot pass it to another. There is no evidence that the avian influenza viruses can infect humans through properly cooked food.
