Chicken

Why should I buy chicken from the Co-op?

We want you to be able to enjoy your chicken knowing that animal welfare has been taken seriously. That's why our standard fresh chickens are 100% British and raised to the UK Red Tractor Farm Assurance benchmark. We’ve also taken things further and put our own set of standards in place, which our farmers need to achieve. These include:

  • Providing things like straw bales that encourage natural behaviour
  • Having windows in the sheds to provide natural daylight
  • Feeding chickens a balanced diet that promotes good health
  • Giving the birds periods of darkness to allow them to rest

Meet the producer - Joe

Joe is a farming area manager. See how he raises chicks into happy healthy chickens.

Joe, is a farming area manager and takes great pride in ensuring the chicks are raised into happy and healthy chickens. As they grow, the chicks are kept entertained with bales and play strings to peck. Food and water is on tap & readily available - special water lines respond to pecking, and tiny water trays underneath each tap keeps the straw dry, which in turn keeps the chick’s feet healthy. As well as being warm and cosy, the barns are full of natural light.

The farms on which Co-op chickens are raised are red tractor approved and in farms like the one Joe is on in the pictures, also meet Co-op standards in areas such as sustainability.

The turbine helps supply energy to the farm,’ Joe says. ‘And when we clean up between each new crop of chicks arriving, the litter is taken to a local power station to be used as fuel.’

Joe has 18 year’s experience looking after chickens all over the world, Joe knows just about all there is to know about his feathered wards. He’s also a member of both the Co-op Chicken Farming Group and the Co-op Farming Pioneers programme, designed to bring like-minded young farmers together to talk about their work and share ideas.

Joe says ‘There’s no better feeling than seeing the chickens every day. You see them grow and do what’s best for them until they’re adults.’

  • 100% of our fresh chicken and chilled prepared meals containing chicken are British, sourced from farms in England and Scotland.

  • All our standard fresh chickens are raised to our high animal welfare standards. This means they have a balanced diet designed to provide good health, significant natural light from windows within the housing, resting time and hours of darkness per day. They are also able to stimulate natural behaviour through environmental enrichment in the housing such as straw bales.
